Summary

In this conversation, Kelly Cagle discusses the importance of community, especially in motherhood. She highlights four points: the need for a helper, the strength in numbers, the importance of knowing your values, and the ability to shift communities when seasons change. Kelly emphasizes the significance of prayer in finding the right community and the need to avoid comparison. She also addresses the question of whether to stay in a community based on conviction and aligning values. Finally, she advises listeners to find a village that aligns with their values and to dive deep into that community.

Takeaways

  • Community is essential in navigating the challenges of motherhood.

  • Prayer is important in finding the right community.

  • Avoid comparing yourself to others in the community.

  • Be open to shifting communities when seasons change.

  • Listen to the conviction in your spirit when deciding whether to stay in a community.

  • Find a community that aligns with your values and dive deep into it.

The need for community

  1. Why do we need it?

    1. Genesis 2:18 “Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just just right for him.’”

    2. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 “Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.”

    3. Ecclesiastes 4:12 “A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.”

  2. How do I find community?

    1. Pray

    2. Know your values

    3. Avoid comparison

  3. How to shift out of communities when seasons change (and not feel like something is wrong with you)

    1. Switching soccer teams

    2. Friendship groups– home groups, churches

  4. Should I stay in this community? Do I still belong?

    1. Experiencing conviction from being in certain community groups?

    2. Famous quote by Jim Rohn, “you’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Suggesting that our thoughts and behaviors are greatly influenced by our environments.

Final piece of advice: you will NOT belong in every community. And that’s ok! Find a village that aligns with yours and dive deep into that village.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference Parenting is hard work. It requires tons of boundaries, daily consistency, so much awareness, as well as lots of patience, grace, wisdom, and filters. Combine that hefty list with all of life’s demands and others’ voice may become louder than yours in your child’s life, increasing their anxiety, fears, and doubts.

Healthy parenting is about seeing yourself as your child’s #1 teacher, saying the right words (or nothing at all) at the right time, and having the right tools to be intentional and impactful. Guessing your way through life, which is what most parents do, is a recipe for failure, but following the lead of someone who has two decades of research-based information and fully understands the demands of parenthood is a recipe for a full life— for you and your child.
