INSIGHTS

I recently received a phone call from a mom who is wanting to connect with her kids, as the days just keep flashing before her eyes.

I also just finished watching This is Us– no spoilers here, but y’all, is the show eye opening to how beautiful and precious parenthood truly is. Which brings me to another show, Parenthood… This episode isn’t about advertising for shows, but those two shows gave Josh and I new perspectives into how we spend our days with our boys.

An area that can truly be a thief of this intentionality is technology.

  • Kids on their phones, tablets, TV

  • Adults on their phones, TV, video games

How can we keep technology from distracting our family?

  1. Always be on guard against it

  2. Always be aware of how much time you or your kids are spending on tech

  3. Always be willing to establish and/or restructure technology boundaries when gadgets have consumed more time and attention than you’re ok with

What does it look like to establish or restructure boundaries?

  1. Clearly communicate why things are going to be different

  2. Clearly communicate how things are going to be different

Here are some personal examples of what goes on in my household:

  • Guarding against it– shows, sports, phone/TV spoken and unspoken rules.

  • Awareness– talking amongst ourselves if we’ve been watching too much TV or have been bending/breaking rules

  • Willingness– never too proud to call each other out (in love) and to change
