Your home should be your child’s primary “school” in many areas. In this episode, I’ll teach on four of these areas, which will help you better equip your child as they attend their actual school.

insights

Horace Mann, the Father of the public education system, had six primary educational principals, with one being:

“The public should no longer remain ignorant and public schools were the solution to that problem” (Brown, 2015, p. 44).

  • The disconnect during the child’s academic years began

    • Parents ill-equipped

    • Less time with kids

    • Teachers became the primary teacher

  • Parents may not be equipped to teach academic content, but ignorant is a rather strong word to overgeneralize society.

  • 4 areas where parents need to teach in the home:

  1. Emotional Intelligence

    1. How to be a good friend

    2. How to choose good friends

    3. How to handle conflict

  2. Curriculum

    1. Different views and beliefs

    2. Unless you’re in the 1.7 million students (National Center for Education Statistics, 2019) that are being homeschooled, then you don’t have a strong say in what curriculum is utilized.

  3. Core Belief Systems

    1. Ethical standards

    2. Philosophical beliefs

    3. Religious views

  4. Self-control

    1. When to talk

    2. How to listen

    3. Boundaries (technology)
