on today’s episode…
Sometimes, without even noticing, we rely on our kids’ for affirmation in our areas of insecurities.
insights
How often do you find yourself looking for affirmation from your child? Sometimes you may actually not even notice it…
Here are some examples:
When you say I love you, what do you expect to hear back?
When you dress up nicely, you ask them, how do I look?
When you cook dinner, you ask them, what do you think? Is it yummy?
None of those are “bad” per se. However, we shouldn’t place an expectation on our kids to fill up the places where we may be insecure.
#1 thing is to find your security in who you are in Christ.
Avoid:
Telling your kids they’re ungrateful because they didn’t “thank you” for dinner
Feeling like you don’t look beautiful because you didn’t “hear” anyone tell you
Expecting an “I love you” back
You want to raise confident children, correct? Then lead by example.
Be confident in life, and show them what confidence looks like.
Need words of affirmation? Also lead by example!
Praise them… thank them… compliment them.
But, don’t expect these things from them. Just welcome them when they come and find your confidence and identity in just being you.
