Insights

Have you ever heard parents (or yourself!) say things like:

  • “Of course, you didn’t put your clothes away… why are you so lazy??”

  • “You’re such a liar! I can’t trust you to tell me the truth.”

  • “You’re such a messy person! Clean your room!”

  • Or kids saying these things about themselves:

    • “I’m terrible at math… I hate it.”

    • “I’m so ugly/fat/short/stupid, etc”

    • “I’m a scaredy cat”

  • All of these examples are touching their identities– who they believe they are

  • Speak to their choices rather than their identity.

    • “You’re making poor choices” vs “You’re a bad girl/boy.”

  • Instead of adding labels, speak positive identities about who you want them to believe they are.

  • Be aware of how we deliver messages.

    • “Don’t run!” vs “Walk!”

There’s enough negativity in the world… let your home be a place where everyone gets refueled with positivity, and most importantly, TRUTH about who they are.

Speak to their choices rather than their identity.
