Outline
Welcome to the Season 2: Conversation Starters finale! Because it’s almost everyone's beloved's summer break, I wanted to present to you 3 areas you should really be mindful of that could cause long-term issues or unwanted behaviors in your kiddos.
3 WARNINGS ABOUT THE SUMMER MONTHS
Screen Time
Ex: From the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry: “too much screen time may lead to: sleep problems, lower grades in school, reading fewer books, less time with family and friends, not enough outdoor or physical activity, weight problems, mood problems, poor self-image and body image issues, fear of missing out, less time learning other ways to relax and have fun.” Read full article here.Summer Slide
Ex: Summer slide is a term used to define the digression of learned content that happens over the summer break. Math and reading are the most impacted areas. **Look for a reel this week with resources I’ve used with the kids during the summer to avoid this digression! Read blog here.Routine
Ex: According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the suggested time of sleep for each age group is: 4-12 months is 12-16 hours; 1-2 years old is 11-14 hours; 3-5 years old is 10-13 hours; 6-12 years old is 9-12 hours; and 13-18 years old is 8-10 hours. Read full article here.
Outro
Why would boys want to go back to school in August after spending the entire summer competing in video games where they felt invincible and were constantly rewarded for their victories? Is school anything like that? Nope.
Similarly, why would girls be excited to go back to school after being glued to social media all summer seeing the latest fashion trends and learning TikTok dances? School isn’t anything like that either.
So if you don’t want your kids to give you the hardest time going back to school in August, it starts with how you handle their summer break!
Summer isn’t a time to unplug from reality. Don’t let your kids get accustomed to a false sense of reality.
Here’s a sample of 90% of our days: read for about 15 minutes when they wake up, 1 hour of screen time, play/homework, 1 hour of screen time after lunch (not during lunch), play/homework… bedtime 8:30.
When kids are given the opportunity to digest new information with you, their #1 teacher, in their safe space, they begin welcoming new challenges, as their curiosity, competence, and confidence flourishes… making them lifelong learners.
