Outline
Let’s start with a question: does your child ask for something any time they enter a store?
How can we help our kids understand that they don’t need something? In other words, how can we teach them about consumerism?
It starts with YOU. What example of consumerism are you setting for your kids?
P. 37-38 of Clutterfree with Kids by Joshua Becker
3 TIPS FOR PARENTS (Modify as needed for the age groups)
Say no and tell them why
Ex: “No, because we’re saving our money so we can go to the beach! Isn’t it going to be so much fun building sand castles together?!”Tell them a personal story when you said no to something you wanted
Ex: A recent story or a flashback when you were a child. Help them recognize that you relate with themDeclutter often
Ex: As you declutter, digest it with them
Outro
Let your home be a place where things don’t rule you, where what others have isn’t a constant conversation, or where consumerism isn’t a distraction.
When kids are given the opportunity to digest new information with you, their #1 teacher, in their safe space, they begin welcoming new challenges, as their curiosity, competence, and confidence flourishes… making them lifelong learners.
