Outline
Today, I’m digesting 4 questions found in the book Quiet by Susan Cain.
These are 4 tips for educators Cain included in a resource, but I’m translating that information into seeing your home as the child’s #1 “school.”
4 TIPS FOR PARENTS (Modify as needed for the age groups)
Re-examine the home for “group-work.”
Ex: When “working in groups” in the home, or the moments where brainstorming, storytelling, or discussions take place, make sure to include specific space for the introverted child.Don’t seat shy or introverted kids in “high-interaction” areas of the home.
Ex: Make sure they have spaces to unwind too!Wait five seconds after asking questions.
Ex: Although silence can be awkward, it gives the introverts a chance to digest the question and construct a response. If you’re going to “grade” on participation around the house, acknowledge knowledge versus only participation.
Ex: The quieter kids may not speak up as often, but when they do, it’s typically something extremely wise and throughout! Tell them! Value their voice and insight!
