INSIGHTS

This episode is not just for University-Model parents or for those interested in learning more about the model… it is for every single parent, regardless of the school setting their child attends!

Although it’ll be informative of what the model is, I’ll also connect how some of the strategies unique to the University-Model can be applied in every home.

Historical background:

  • UM was designed by 8 homeschooling parents in 1992

  • In 1993, the first ever UM school, Grace Preparatory Academy opened its doors in Arlington, Texas

  • As of 2022, there are now 91 campuses using the UM, with a few of those schools still under development.

A gist of the model:

A collaboration between highly qualified teachers and parents.

Parents receive the title of co-teacher or co-instructor and facilitate their child’s learning during satellite days.

All new content is learned from the teacher during in-person days.

  • Primary (K-2) and Elementary (3-6) attend in-person on T, Th

    • Satellite days on W, W, F

  • Secondary (7-12) attend in-person on M, W, F

    • Satellite days on T, Th

Because of the demands of satellite days (which vary on student’s grade level and abilities)..

  • Stay-at-home parent, part-time working parent, flexible work schedules, work-from-home

3 lessons I’ve learned being a University-Model participant for 3 years:

  • The need for academic independence

    • COVID + learning

  • Observing Levi as a learner

    • His intelligence… kinesthetic

    • Empowering him with that self-awareness

    • Ways to study

  • Bring back the love of learning

Application of these lessons to all academic settings:

  • The need for academic independence

  • Observing your child as a learner… lifelong benefits!

  • Bringing back the love of learning… being lifelong learners
