It really is never too early to talk about what your kids want to be when they grow up. But this conversation goes way beyond that!

Outline

Adulthood seems so distant when we are wrangling toddlers, dealing with hormone changes in our pre-teens, or juggling work schedules of our teenagers.

It is never too early to have the conversation of exploring what your kids want to be when they grow up– and have it constantly!

While I teach on this topic, I want to present a challenge to you. Instead of focusing on different career options for your kids, try to connect learning and experiences to how they can be beneficial to them in the long run.

3 WAYS TO HELP YOUR KIDS THINK AND PREPARE FOR THEIR FUTURE

  1. Connect life skills to how you use them as an adult
Ex: “Wow, you memorize information really well. That really comes in handy when you have to prepare for a presentation;” “Understanding percentages can be tricky, but it really helps when you have to tip a waiter;” “Speaking in front of others can be scary, but it’s a skill that you develop through practice!” Even if you notice they’re really great at arguing… guess what attorneys do for a living?

  2. Talk about different professions, not just your own
Ex: Slow down and discuss the road construction; the different tractors; let them ask questions at the dentist office; explore the informative flyers on the wall at the doctor’s and vet offices.

  3. Let them dream!
Ex: While flying a fighter jet on a video game, Titus said, “I should be a pilot because I’m really good at this!” He also says, “I’m the fastest in my class!”

Outro
This topic will fluctuate constantly, as their interests and strengths develop and change. But what should remain consistent is how you help them see the lessons and preparations taking place in all their life encounters… essentially the big picture of their learning and experiences.
When kids are given the opportunity to digest new information with you, their #1 teacher, in their safe space, they begin welcoming new challenges, as their curiosity, competence, and confidence flourishes… making them lifelong learners.
